The mission of the Dimond Improvement Association (DIA) is to make Oakland's Dimond neighborhood a vital, safe and beautiful place for everyone: children and adults, business owners and residents, renters and homeowners. DIA is a community-based volunteer group that accomplishes these goals by building communication among other Dimond organizations and working with the City and other groups to undertake projects.
The DIA began over 50 years ago by successfully lobbying the City of Oakland to stabilize the McKillop Slide area near Sheffield Avenue and to build Wood Park in the stabilized area, securing City funding for Dimond Library, and working with the City to establish parking under Highway 580 at Fruitvale Avenue and Montana Street.
In the 1990s, the DIA's successful projects included the free public parking lot at Dimond Avenue and Bienati Way, the Dimond Gateway at Lincoln and MacArthur, and the mural on the side of Ann's Cafe.
